Bow Waves in the Bull Dust
A new edition of Leaves From the Peninsula
The Cape York stations were the heartland of small, family enterprises and were therefore very different from the vast stations in the Gulf and the NT, often owned by big companies and absentee landlords. Lennie lived her childhood in the small country townships of Queensland and her adulthood on the Peninsula. In the years after WWII Lennia and her fellow cattle-breeders around Laura and Coen bounced over the primitive bush tracks in US Army surplus jeeps and blitz-trucks.
In emergencies during the Wet they improvised canvas boats to cross the river or risked their proverbial nine cat's lives in very small planes soaring over the mountains to Cairns. They populated the Peninsula enthusiastically with poddy calves, foals and babies and left their bush humour imprinted forever in the myths of the region.
